Sgema’s publishing arm has released a charity picture book produced by Palestinian refugees from the Aida Refugee Camp, Bethlehem. All profits from the work will be donated to raise emergency funds for SOS Children’s Villages Palestine.
‘The Boy and the Wall’, is a poignant children’s picture book reproduced in multi-language form (Arabic; English; and Welsh) offering a window into the lives of children living with the challenges of displacement and is a heartfelt and imaginative reflection of resilience and hope.
The book, originally written by Amahl Bishara with collage imagery made by the youths from the Lajee Centre, is a response to the eight-metre-high wall built near the camp in 2004, reflecting the dreams and resilience of Palestinian youths.
All print and production costs incurred have been donated free of charge by the company with its visual remastering overseen pro bono by award-winning creative designer, Charlotte Hughes-Evans.
The project was brought to the attention of Sgema’s team by internationally acclaimed poet Menna Elfyn, Wales PEN Cymru President. Commenting on the announcement she encouraged those interested in supporting the humanitarian appeal to purchase the publication:
“The wonderful work was brought to my attention during my period as Children’s Poet Laureate for Wales. I was in contact with the centre and aware of the inspiring projects they undertook. Sharing this children’s story not only supports the humanitarian fundraising effort but also shares a message of hope from children living through displacement and conflict.”
The Lajee Centre, is a non-profit organisation founded in 1999, encourages creativity and critical thinking among the children of the camp, providing a safe space for activities ranging from dabkeh folk dancing to computer skills.
The book, visually remastered and translated into Welsh to accompany its original Arabic and English, is now available to purchase online (Shop Sgema) and in select stores, with all profits raised donated to emergency funds to support humanitarian relief in Palestine.
