This picture book was made by the young people at Lajee Centre in Aida Refugee Camp near the city of Bethlehem in the West Bank, Palestine. It was created in response to the ‘Wall’ built outside the centre by the Israeli Government from 2004 onwards.
It is a story about how the separation wall has affected the lives of the people living in Aida Refugee Camp and an imaginative reflection of a child’s response to the wall.
The Boy and the Wall, written by Amahl Bishara and illustrated with collages made by Lajee youth, has been reproduced as a multi-lingual publication (Arabic; English; Welsh) with all proceeds being donated to Sgema’s charity of the year: SOS Children’s Villages Palestine.
“As Children’s Poet Laureate for Wales, I was in contact with the centre and aware of their inspiring projects. All profits from the sale of this multilingual reproduction will be donated to a designated charity working in Palestine.”
– Menna Elfyn, Poet and Author
